Despite pop culture’s decades-long obsession with post-apocalyptic settings, most people would agree that a collapsed, dystopian future isn’t exactly appealing. Amazon, however, seems to see things differently.

The company is expanding the Fallout universe with Fallout Shelter, a new reality competition series inspired by the long-running video game franchise and Prime Video’s hit live-action adaptation. The show will place real participants inside Vault-Tec–inspired bunkers, translating the Fallout experience into a reality TV format.

Amazon revealed the project in a press announcement released on Thursday.

According to the statement, Fallout Shelter will immerse contestants in a high-pressure environment shaped by the franchise’s signature dark humor, retro-futuristic style, and survival-driven storytelling. As the competition unfolds, participants will face increasingly demanding tasks, strategic standoffs, and ethical choices, all while proving their creativity, teamwork, and resilience in pursuit of safety, influence, and a significant cash reward.

Although monetary prizes have never been central to the Fallout games or television series, setting a reality show inside one of the franchise’s iconic vaults fits naturally with its lore. The Fallout world is set centuries after a catastrophic nuclear war destroyed much of civilization in an alternate timeline. Those deemed “fortunate” survived by retreating into underground vaults—many of which were secretly engineered as morally questionable social experiments.

In both the games and Prime Video’s series, protagonists such as Ella Purnell’s character Lucy begin their journeys as vault residents before venturing into the hazardous wasteland above. That external world is populated by hostile groups, mutated creatures, and competing factions, each struggling to shape the future of society.

Details about Fallout Shelter remain limited, including how many contestants will take part or whether the competition will ever extend beyond the vault walls. The format could resemble a science-fiction spin on Big Brother, with players confined to a controlled space while navigating unpredictable and unconventional challenges.

Casting for the series is now underway. The show’s official description notes that competitors will be tested across the seven defining attributes of the Fallout universe: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck—collectively known as S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Social dynamics, alliances, and popularity will also influence outcomes.

No release date has been announced so far.

Fallout Shelter Joins a Growing List of Dystopian Reality Shows

While Fallout’s themes translate surprisingly well to unscripted television, recreating a bleak, post-apocalyptic setting with real people carries an unsettling edge—even within a controlled production environment. Still, the franchise’s satirical tone suggests that Fallout Shelter will approach its concept with irony and humor.

The announcement follows closely on the heels of Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix’s reality adaptation of the dystopian Korean drama centered on economic desperation. Compared to the stark intensity of Squid Game, Fallout’s exaggerated and stylized vision of the apocalypse may be better suited to the reality TV format.
