Apple could be the latest company to enter the wearable AI space.
According to a report from The Information, the world’s largest tech company is working on an AI-enabled wearable device roughly the size of an AirTag, though slightly thicker and with significantly more hardware inside.
The device is said to include two cameras, three microphones, a speaker, and a physical button. It would likely pair with iPhones to provide access to collected data such as photos, videos, and audio. The wearable could allow users to ask questions, retrieve information, or perform tasks on the go using AI features tied to Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment.
Wearable AI devices are not a new concept, and several companies are already experimenting in this space, including Memories.ai, note-taking startup Plaud, and life-logging company Looki. However, not all attempts have been successful.
Startup Humane previously launched a $699 AI pin that failed to gain traction. The device, developed by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, was later discontinued, and the underlying technology was sold to HP.
Apple’s track record of building mass-market wearables that improve rapidly through yearly iterations could give it an advantage in the emerging AI hardware category. The company has also been rumored to be developing other wearable products, including a smart ring and smart glasses.
Competition may also come from OpenAI, which is reportedly working on a compact AI hardware device designed by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive.
