Spotify has quietly rolled out a significant upgrade to its Mixed Playlists feature, giving music lovers and playlist creators far more control over how songs transition from one track to the next.

Although the company didn’t formally announce the update, users have recently begun discovering the new customization tools—and many are praising the feature for making playlist mixing feel even closer to professional DJ software.

A hidden upgrade to one of Spotify’s best creative tools

Mixed Playlists debuted in August 2025 as Spotify’s answer to seamless playlist mixing. Unlike automated systems that rely entirely on AI, Spotify lets users manually shape transitions between songs.

The feature already displayed useful musical information like:

  • Song BPM (beats per minute)
  • Musical key
  • Transition effects

Now, Spotify has expanded those controls by allowing users to edit effect curves directly.

More precise control over every transition

Previously, users could apply preset transition effects or choose presets individually for:

  • Volume
  • Equalizer (EQ)
  • Filter

The new update introduces a Customize option that lets users drag points on each effect curve, giving much finer control over how transitions evolve between tracks.

Instead of simply selecting a preset, users can now decide exactly:

  • When an effect begins
  • How gradually it increases
  • When it fades away

This results in smoother, more natural transitions that resemble those created in dedicated DJ software.

Why playlist creators love it

The additional control helps eliminate the small imperfections that preset transitions sometimes create.

For example, a high-pass filter no longer has to activate at a fixed point. Users can now position and shape the filter curve wherever it sounds best, creating cleaner blends between songs with different tempos or musical styles.

For anyone who enjoys building playlists that flow continuously, the update makes the process far more creative.

There are still a few rough edges

Early users have also reported a couple of minor issues.

Some say adjusting the curve points can initially feel a bit fiddly, especially when trying to place them precisely.

Others have noticed that edited points occasionally snap back to their original positions, although reports suggest this happens only occasionally and doesn’t significantly affect usability.

A welcome change from Spotify

Rather than introducing another entirely new feature, Spotify has chosen to improve an existing creative tool—a move many users have welcomed.

The update demonstrates a greater focus on refining features people already enjoy instead of continually adding new ones.

Availability

The enhanced customization controls appear to be rolling out gradually.

While some Spotify users report having access to the feature for several months, many are only now seeing the update arrive on their accounts.

Final thoughts

Spotify’s latest Mixed Playlists enhancement may have arrived without fanfare, but it’s proving to be one of the platform’s most appreciated updates. By allowing users to fine-tune transition curves for volume, EQ, and filters, the streaming service gives playlist creators even greater artistic control over how their music flows.

For listeners who enjoy crafting playlists that feel more like live DJ sets than simple song collections, this quiet upgrade is a surprisingly powerful addition.
